COVID-19 Disruptions in Screening Could Lead to More Colorectal Cancers and Deaths

Colorectal cancer screening (CRC) programs around the world have been disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. To explore the impact of disruptions to cancer screening of all types, the COVID-19 and Cancer Global Modelling Consortium was established to inform responses to screening disruptions, guide policymakers, and influence prevention practices during and after the pandemic.

In a blog post on Healio, Lucie de Jonge, a researcher at Erasmus MC University Medical Center Rotterdam, explains the model created by the Consortium to understand the impact of COVID-19 on CRC screenings and what can be done to prevent an increase in cancers and deaths.

Ms. de Jonge presented data from the study “Impact of COVID-19 related disruptions to colorectal cancer screening programs in three countries: A comparative modelling study,” abstract 783, at Digestive Disease Week® (DDW) 2021.
