DEI at DDW® 2023: Where Are We Now and Where Do We Need to Go?

Digestive Disease Week® (DDW) is committed to working towards equity in digestive diseases through programming and including diverse voices. This year’s program includes a full slate of relevant topics on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI).

The DDW 2023 Diversity Symposium, Diversity Equity, and Inclusion: Where Are We Now and Where Do We Need to Go?, taking place Monday, May 8, 4–5:30 p.m., is co-sponsored by all four societies and will cover the progression of DEI in medicine and gastroenterology, highlighting some of the recent strides that have been made, as well as illustrating work that still needs to be done. Specific topics that will be covered include the minority tax, retention of minorities in medicine and microaggressions toward minority providers.

Attendees will learn how to:

  • Identify the strides that have been made in DEI up to this point.
  • Describe the minority tax and provide solutions to “untax” minorities.
  • Retain individuals in their institution.
  • Describe how discrimination and microaggressions can impact minority providers and become and upstander and bystander when they see this in action.

The DDW Diversity Reception will take place immediately following the session. This reception is a great opportunity to network, continue to discuss the issues from the session and learn more about what each society is doing to promote diversity in GI.
