Four experts will discuss the management for nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and its progression to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) during Tuesday’s AASLD Clinical Symposium Identification and Management of Patients with NAFLD/NASH.
Kymberly D. Watt, MD, medical director of the liver transplant program at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, will co-moderate the 90-minute symposium with Mary E. Rinella, MD, FAASLD, associate professor of medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, IL.
“Historically, there have been limits to our knowledge of the risk of progressive disease and what could be done for it in terms of the management and treatment,” Dr. Watt said. “There are increasing numbers of studies and data that are not only providing a better understanding of the progression of disease, but targets for impacting this progression and long-term outcomes.”
Rohit Loomba, MD, professor of medicine in the division of gastroenterology at the University of California, San Diego will open the symposium with a discussion of noninvasive diagnostic techniques for NASH. Stephen H. Caldwell, MD, FAASLD, professor of medicine at the University of Virginia Health System, Charlottesville, will then address weight loss and exercise as a NASH treatment modality.
The session will continue with a lecture from Mohammad S. Siddiqui, MD, assistant professor at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, Richmond, who will review the effect of available agents on NASH and whether those agents can have an impact on disease progression. The session will conclude with a look at future therapeutics for NASH by Manal F. Abdelmalek, MD, MPH, FAASLD, associate professor of medicine at Duke University School of Medicine, Durham, NC.
“The goal of the symposium is to review what is known, highlight the progress in identifying NASH versus NAFLD and discuss treatment targets to help clinicians optimize their decision-making,” Dr. Watt said.
