Session Description
Led by AGA Institute President Bishr Omary, MD, PhD, AGAF, the 2021 AGA Presidential Plenary is designed to highlight timely, high-impact research and recap AGA’s work this past year. The plenary will begin with the presidential address, “Pandemic Lessons Learned in Practice and Research,” and will include several keynote addresses.
Shahnaz Sultan, MD, MHSc, will present “Timely, Transparent and Trustworthy AGA Guidelines Highlight What We Know and Don’t Know.” Dr. Sultan is an associate professor of medicine and the program director for the Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program at the University of Minnesota. She is a leader in guideline development and serves on the AGA Clinical Guidelines Committee and the GRADE Working Group.
After Dr. Sultan’s lecture, Arun J. Sanyal, MD, will give his presentation, “NAFLD or MAFLD: Names and Their Implications.” Dr. Sanyal will discuss the historical basis for NAFLD nomenclature and its deficiencies and the rationale for changing to MAFLD. He will also give a patient-centric review of what the change in nomenclature will mean and how secular trends in the field will be impacted by a name change. Dr. Sanyal is a professor of medicine, physiology and molecular pathology at Virginia Commonwealth University. He was recently ranked in the top 0.01% of medical scientists based on their impact on the field.
Following, Mikael Dolsten, MD, PhD, will present “The Making of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine.” As Chief Scientific Officer at Pfizer Inc., Dr. Dolsten focuses on advancing Pfizer’s scientific breakthrough leadership in small-molecule medicine, biotherapeutics, gene therapies and vaccines. He also leads the Worldwide Research, Development and Medical organization at Pfizer.
In his presentation, “Post-Pandemic Path Forward for GI Research,” Griffin P. Rodgers, MD, director of the NIDDK, will present a brief overview of digestive disease research programs supported by the NIDDK. His presentation will feature research challenges and opportunities, including the COVID-19 pandemic, career development programs, the Institute’s strategic plan, and the inclusion of underrepresented minorities in the research enterprise.
During the session, Gail Hecht, MD, and Michael Camilleri, MD, will also be recognized as the 2020 and 2021 Friedenwald Medal recipients. The plenary will conclude with a live Q&A session so attendees can ask questions in real time.
