Studies explore endoscopy training issues, trends to improve patient safety

A series of presentations covered several recent studies focusing on ways to enhance and improve endoscopy training — and ultimately improve patient safety — for both the trainer and trainee during an ASGE session on Saturday “Training Tips in Endoscopy for the Student and the Teacher.” Joshua B. Satchwell, MD, discussed the results of a randomized trial looking at a game-based learning intervention.

Experts will explore ways to reduce hospitalizations for cirrhosis patients

Patients with decompensated cirrhosis are known to have very high rates of hospitalization, putting increasing financial pressure on hospitals and physician groups to prevent these hospitalizations. A Sunday afternoon AASLD symposium — co-chaired by Elliot B. Tapper, MD, and Michael L. Volk, MD — will provide attendees with an overview of the problem.

AGA session offers ergonomics tips for endoscopy

An AGA Postgraduate Course breakout session on ergonomics Saturday afternoon included tips for optimal room design and strategies to minimize musculoskeletal injury during endoscopy. The session was led by Katherine S. Garman, MD, AGAF, and Amandeep K. Shergill, MD, of the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine.

Experts to review diagnosis and management of liver masses

A multidisciplinary panel will discuss current treatment options for benign solid and cystic liver masses, as well as the surgical and nonsurgical treatment options for hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma during Monday morning’s AASLD symposium “The Management of Liver Masses,” co-chaired by Chirag Desai, MD.
