A Fix for Colic? Formula Reduces Infant Crying from 3 Hours to 30 Minutes

New parents often face a bewildering challenge in trying to decipher what triggers a crying baby and how to calm the baby down. But, for those unlucky parents of babies with infantile colic — about 20 percent — the cause remains unknown and their babies are inconsolable, typically crying for more than three hours a day, at least three days a week, for more than three weeks.

Reporting at DDW® 2017, Dr. Yvan Vandenplas and his research team at the Free University of Brussels found that a new formula is effective in reducing infantile colic, at least in a subset of infants, and improving the quality of life for parents and child. He shares his findings in a new blog post on Gastroenterology & Endoscopy News.

Dr. Vandenplas presented data from the study “A synbiotic partial whey hydrolysate with reduced lactose decreases infantile colic and improves quality of life scoring; a randomized open pilot study,” abstract 498, on Monday, May 8, at 9:15 a.m. CT, at McCormick Place in Chicago.
